EKK, Inc. Newsletter - 1st Quarter 2008
It's been a while since you've heard from us, but that isn't for lack of things to say. We've been so busy using, selling, and improving our software that the time has just flown by!
Latest version of pre-processor released
Version 2008.1 of MESHID has been released. Our focus with MESHID in recent months has been to enhance usability. With this release, our users can now:
- Prepare STL files for meshing directly in MESHID. CAPCAST uses a condensed variation of STL files as input to the automatic FEM meshing software, and the ability to convert the STL files within MESHID allows the user to see each STL file, simplifying the conversion process and ensuring less chance for error.

- Define regions of the mesh by 'tunnel'. This option allows the user to select a specific point in a region of the mesh that she wants to identify as an entity such as a cooling line or a core, and MESHID will 'tunnel' through the mesh and assign the adjoining elements to the new entity.
- The flow solver setup GUI (FLOW.REC editor) has been redesigned to a more compact format, as shown below:

Latest version of post-processor released
Version 2008.1 of CAPOST has been released. Our focus with CAPOST in recent months has been to enhance efficiency for the user and to improve the quality of the exported images of simulation results. With this release, our users can now:
- Use a macro / batch job for simulation results. The batch job allows the user to quickly assign parameters for viewing results in one window, as well as to save viewing parameters for future use. Model orientation files can be used for specifying custom viewing angles and zoom factors. When used effectively, this functionality increases user productivity and efficiency in generating reports.
- Create AVI animations of simulation results, which gives the user another option for animation file format when sending results to their customers.
- Create smaller GIF animations of simulation results.
- Turn off one or more colors in the legend. This can be used to turn off specific gates when using our flow solver's gate tracking capability.
- View animations of results stored in elemental results files (Temperature, Solid Fraction, Filling Time, etc.) on a model that is best viewed with displaced model coordinates, such as tilt-pour castings and HPDCs w/shot sleeves. An example of this is shown below:

- Create "prettier" pictures. The images below show how visualization in CAPOST has been improved in a recent version of CAPOST (click each image to view a larger version):

EKK at CastExpo'08
EKK will be exhibiting our sofware and consulting services at the CastExpo'08 May 17 - 20, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Be sure to stop by booth 2810 with CAD of a design in STL format so we can create a mesh and perform a preliminary analysis while you wait.
New addition to EKK
This past January we hired Kim Gaston as our new Office Manager. Kim brings a background in graphic design to EKK, and we are looking forward to her implementing some dynamic updates to our marketing materials and website.
Did You Know?
We have expanded our consulting services to include full engineering design capability for high pressure die castings.
We can provide gating locations based on the customer's part geometry, detailed runner and gating designs, and recommendations for modifications of existing runner and overflow/venting geometry based on simulation results. We can also provide a recommended velocity profile using a unique shot sleeve simulation as well as recommended casting process parameters based on simulation results.
Please call or email Ken Siersma to take advantage of our new design services.
