The CAPCAST
software package includes a module for finite element stress analysis
of castings and dies. It is very useful for simulating thermal
stresses and the resulting distortions that can cause parts to fall out
of tolerance and even crack in some cases.
Thermal stress and distortion
analysis on castings can expose dimensional problems in the design
stage before a significant financial investment has been made.
On molds, thermal stress and
distortion simulation can identify interference and GAP problems. These GAPS, in turn can have an effect on
the overall mold and casting temperatures, and in the dimensions of the
final product.
