EKK, Inc. Newsletter - January/February 2004

Steve Elmore submits himself to full time flogging

After working as a Co-op student for a year, Steve decided to accept EKK's offer and work full time starting in January.  He will still be attending graduate school at the University of Michigan part time and expects to finish his Master's in Mechanical Engineering this summer or fall.  Steve will mainly be working on research projects such as the DOE and USCAR projects.  In addition, he'll assist Marty with consulting projects and possibly help Ken with software development in the future (if Ken will allow it!).

User Meeting - May 13, 2004

We have chosen May 13 as the date for this year's user meeting. On this date we invite our software users to visit us at our office in Walled Lake, Michigan to meet other users, share success stories, and make suggestions for future software improvements. We will also make our team available to any user who wishes to stay an extra day (May 12 or May 14) for one-to-one troubleshooting. We look forward to this opportunity to get together with a majority of our users to discuss our software services.

Please let us know if you plan to attend by April 30, 2004.

See EKK at the 108th Metalcasting Congress

EKK will be exhibiting our software and consulting services at this year's combined AFS / NADCA 108th Metalcasting Congress in Rosemont, Illinois June 12-15th. As always, if you are interested in a free impromptu demonstration of our software, we encourage you to bring CAD of a design (preferably STL format) and we can create a mesh and perform a preliminary analysis while you wait! Come see us at booth 304.

In addition, Steve Elmore will be presenting his paper Accurately Integrating Pressure Curves Into Flow Simulations For Low Pressure Die Casting Analyses. The abstract for this paper is in the aluminum division of the AFS Session Schedule.

Where oh where has MESHID gone?

For quite some time there have been many updates to the CAPCAST post-processing software CAPOST, but the pre-processing software MESHID has not been mentioned. Well that had to change sometime, and the wait was well worth it! A very stable beta version of MESHID version 2005 has been posted to the software distribution area of our website. Major improvements include:

Keep in mind that this is still considered beta software, although we use it here at EKK everyday. We expect the official release of MESHID to be ready for the user meeting in May, with even more improvements!

Did You Know?

Have you ever had an occasion where you've wanted to alter a section of a mesh down stream from the flow, without remeshing and restarting from the very beginning? An example of this would be modifying overflows. Ordinarily, you would have to make the adjustment and then restart the simulation from the beginning. Well, with WRAFTS that is not necessary. With the MAPping function you can start the simulation with the altered mesh using information from the previous run. The MAPping function tranfers the nodal results from the old simulation onto the new simulation and starts from where you left off. A nifty and time-saving function, especially for explicit code users and users doing overflow investigations. For more information contact Marty at EKK.
