EKK, Inc. News Letter - July 2002
Note: Starting next month, the newsletter will be released bi-monthly. The next newsletter will be released in September.
User Meeting
The 2nd annual EKK User Meeting has come and gone, and like last year we are confident that everyone involved considered it time well spent. Major topics of discussion included:
- Creating finite element meshes with 'Bad CAD'. Often 3D CAD models are not generated solely for input into our automatic finite element mesh generator KENT, and the models are therefore not always as refined as KENT needs them to be. This 'Bad CAD' can have areas of surface overlap, surface gaps, and discontinuous surfaces. Although KENT is good at accomodating some minor surface defects, it cannot always create a suitable mesh from 'Bad CAD'. This phenomenom is commonly known as 'Garbage in, garbage out'. And so, over the next year one of our major areas of focus will involve developing tools to clean up this 'Bad CAD'.
- WRAFTS GUI. Gerald Backer has been working intensively on developing a GUI for his fluid flow software WRAFTS. The goal of this work is to make WRAFTS easier to use, especially when using complex boundary conditions such as variable velocities in HPDC and parametric mesh deformation of metal in the shot sleeve. Although the GUI is currently in Beta stages of development, it does look very promising.
- Hardware upgrades. We can't stress enough how satisfied we are with our newest hardware platform of choice. Many of our customers have already made the switch, and we hope in the coming months more will follow.
Did You Know?
Everyday our fluid flow software WRAFTS is used by casting professionals to simulate filling patterns in high pressure die castings, gravity castings, and tilt pour castings. But did you know WRAFTS can also successfully model complex casting processes such as lost foam, vacuum induced sand casting, and Semi Solid Metal casting?
