EKK, Inc. News Letter - May 2002
Did you miss our article "Computer Modeling of the Semi-Solid Metal Manufacturing Process" in the March 2002 issue of Die Casting Engineer? This paper, written by Gerald Backer, Marty McLaughlin and Chung-Whee Kim, details our work with modeling SSM and ThixomoldingTM processes. We encourage you to obtain a copy of this issue of DCE, as it contains many articles on computer simulation of metal casting processes. Alternatively, click here for our complete article, including pictures of the actual castings (and their problems) used in the analyses.
EKK will be manning a booth at the AFS expo in Kansas City on May 4-7, 2002. Stop by and talk to us in person - both Marty and Dr. Kim will be attending the entire show. If you are interested in a free impromptu demonstration of our software, we encourage you to bring CAD of a design (preferably STL format) and we can create a mesh and perform a 'quick and dirty' analysis while you wait!
Also, Marty will be giving a presentation on Monday the 6th at 2 p.m. The subject of this presentation will be the simulation of porosity growth in an aluminum casting. Stop by and learn about the capabilities of our porosity prediction software.
Historically, EKK has hired college students to work during the summer months. This year, we have hired one student, and by her choice, she started working for us as soon as final exams were over. This kind of enthusiasm (or naiveness) is unprecedented.
With this extra help, we anticipate being able to handle a more intense workload over the next four months. So, if you've been putting off sending us that project, we invite you to do so now.
For quite some time we have preferred to run our software on Intel Pentium based PC workstations running LINUX. However, we hesitated in trying LINUX on the latest products from Intel, and have been looking for a good alternative since the days of the Pentium III 850. We recently purchased a dual AMD Athlon machine, and we were pleasantly surprised by its performance, especially considering the very low cost of this machine. This machine has encouraged some of our customers to upgrade to similar systems. To find out more information on our AMD machine, give us a call.
For a reminder to our users - we have chosen June 13th as the date for the second annual user meeting. You can read more about it in our April newsletter.
